Calculations used to fill veterinary prescriptions

Example 1

A 3 kg snake requires Meloxicam (0.5 mg/mL) at 0.2 mg/kg. How many milliliters of Meloxicam should be administered?

Solution

Amount of Meloxicam given = 3 kg x 0.2 mg/kg
Amount of Meloxicam given = [3*0.2] mg x 1 mL/0.5 mg
Amount of Meloxicam given = [(3*0.2)/0.5] mL
Amount of Meloxicam given = 1.2 mL

Example 2

A 22 kg ferret needs Amoxicillin (250 mg/tablet) at 15 mg/kg. How many tablets of Amoxicillin should be given?

Solution

Number of tablets = 22 kg x 15 mg/kg
Number of tablets = [22*15] mg x 1 tablet/250 mg
Number of tablets = [(22*15)/250] tablets
Number of tablets = 1.32 tablets

Example 3

A 28 kg cow needs Gentamicin (100 mg/mL) at 10 mg/kg. How many milliliters of Gentamicin should be administered?

Solution

Amount of Gentamicin given = 28 kg x 10 mg/kg
Amount of Gentamicin given = [28*10] mg x 1 mL/100 mg
Amount of Gentamicin given = [(28*10)/100] mL
Amount of Gentamicin given = 2.8 mL
